I want to dedicate this edition of "Did You Know?" to the 100 people who lost their lives at the Station nightclub fire 20 years ago. You are not forgotten.

Fact #1

On February 20, 2003, more than 450 people were in attendance to see the band, Great White, when the unthinkable happened. Pyrotechnics lit by the band's tour manager, caused a massive fire, and within minutes, the entire building was engulfed with flames. 230 people were injured and the100 people lost their lives.

On May 21, 2017, the Station Fire Memorial Park was opened on the site of the Station night club and was dedicated to all the victims.

This tragedy led to massive changes in the state fire code, making Rhode Island a state with one of the most strict fire codes in the country.

Fact #2

West Warwick is the youngest town in Rhode Island. Located on the west bank of the Pawtuxet River, the town was incorporated in 1913 after local, democratic politicians made a power play to separate from the republican dominated east side of Warwick.

This move allowed the democrats to control the west side of the river, which housed all the mills in Warwick.

Fact #3

The location of one of West Warwick's best known landmarks, the West Valley Inn, is about to undergo a massive redevelopment.

The Residences at West Valley, which will be comprised of 33 duplexes and 66 total condo units, will be built on the location of the once popular venue.

Personally, I have great memories of the West Valley Inn. It was the location of my wedding reception.

Fact #4

Fun fact for all the wrestling fans out there. Former WCW/WWE wrestler Chuck Palumbo was born and grew up in West Warwick. He was a star basketball player at West Warwick High School.
