Did You Know? Fun Facts About Johnston, RI

For all the Rhode Islanders out there that don't live in Johnston, what is the first thing that comes to mind if I ask you to tell me something about this town? Leave a comment down below and let me know what you thought of.

If you're like me, the first thing that came to my mind was the Central Landfill.

At first, I didn't think that writing about a landfill would be the most interesting thing to to cover in a blog called "Fun Facts About Johnston", but in this case, I believe I was wrong. Below are just a few fun facts that I discovered.

Landfill Fun Fact #1

The Central Landfill is located on the site of a former quarry.

Landfill Fun Fact #2

Gases from the landfill are either burned off with a process called "flaring", which reduces the amount of methane released into the atmosphere, or collected to produce electricity.

Landfill Fun Fact #3

The landfill is a safe habitat for several species of wildlife.

Landfill Fun Fact #4

Check out this video to learn more about the technology and engineering that goes into keeping the environment around the landfill safe. I found it to be really interesting.

Historical Fun Fact

Johnston is home to the Clemence Irons House. Located on George Waterman Rd, it is one of only fourteen stone-ender houses in the entire state of Rhode Island.

Famous People Fun Facts

Some of the more well known people who were born in Johnston include Paul Delvecchio (Pauly D) from the Jersey Shore, Joe Mazzulla - the Boston Celtics head coach, and actress Amanda Clayton.
